About 398 Squadron

398 (Egham & Staines) Squadron Air Training Corps was formed in 1941 and has had as many as 200 cadets at one time. We are now based at our site in Egham, Surrey, just outside Staines. We are one of 25 Squadrons in Middlesex Wing.

We meet on Monday and Thursday evenings, when we do our activities, training and projects. We also have frequent activities at weekends. On a parade evening, this is how things run...

Parade Night Timings

  • 7:15pm Parade starts, when everyone is told what's on the training programme for the night and there is often a quick inspection of everyone's uniform.
  • 7:20pm Parade finishes and lessons start.
  • 8:00pm There's a short break.
  • 8:20pm Then more activities until...
  • 9:00pm Clear up after activities, before the final parade starts.
  • 9:15pm Final parade is the time when upcoming events and important announcements are made, as well as presentations of awards or certificates and even a promotion sometimes.
  • 9:35pm The final parade ends and everyone heads home.

We plan a busy calender of events, both on the squadron and elsewhere. To find out about the activities, look through the rest of this website.

What we do

Our cadets get the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities including gliding, flying, shooting, DofE, water sports, climbing and overseas expeditions just to name a few.

The ATC prides itself on being able to offer so many activities that there is something for everyone, and most importantly, everyone is encouraged to take part, regardless of ability.

Join us

Do you want to learn new skills, develop as a leader, meet new friends and have a great time whilst doing it?

We parade on a Monday and Thursday at our Squadron Headquarters in Pooley Green, Egham.

In order to ensure new cadets get the most out of the organisation we run several recruitment evenings throughout the year, where a number of new cadets all join at the same time and go through their junior cadet training together. This allows new cadets to form friendships with people in the same situations as them as we understand that for some, joining a new organisation can be a little scary!

If you are interested in joining why don't you come and see us, visitors are welcome every parade evening and we suggest you arrive any time after 19.15.

Education opportunities

In addition to the many many fun filled activities that we offer all cadets go through a well structured training syllabus working towards a BTEC in Aviation Studies. Cadets also have the opportunity to enroll in a BTEC in Public Services and a BTEC in Music Services.

These excellent education opportunities give every cadet the opportunity to come away with qualifications that make them stand out from the crowd.
